With the weather beginning to look better, I found myself feeling drawn to do some work in the backyard. Though looking out the window presented quite a daunting task!
So, I decided to do something about it. I know this type of work needs a lot of planning. After all, it has been a while since anybody has even looked at my garden! That could be a reason why the weeds grew that tall in the past few years.
Rather than clean up the backyard to prevent my pets from entering, I had built a large divider so that my kids will be unable to play there! I went to the nearest hardware store and sheepishly told them that my backyard has started to look really wild, like something found deep in nature! Yes, it was like a forest or something! I asked him exactly how do I get of weeds? The store clerk actually laughed at me! What kind of lunatic would laugh at a customer? Aren’t they supposed to be helping customers and not laughing at them? I told him where to go, and proceeded to go to the next hardware store that I could find.
If someone were to see what a mess it is, I would never be able to forgive myself! Add that to the fact that I am pretty excited to build my own shed. I arrived at another hardware store and this person attempts to sell me a lot of expensive gardening stuff! He also asked for the dimensions of the shed that I was planning to build. I told him it was still in the planning stage and didn’t have much of an idea yet. When I got home, I saw that the weeds are still long. I had forgotten all about them!
So, after all that, I decided to look for a gardener who would get rid of all the weeds and tell me how I could prevent that from happening the next time. After all, I could learn a lot from that person.
I woke up the next morning with the mission of hiring a gardener for the weeds. I looked at all the gardeners who work in the area. This quite limited the options because no-one wanted to travel very far, especially at the moment. When the gardener arrived, he could see what needed to be done! He gave me a quote to cut and remove the weeds and I spoke to the wife about it. She didn’t like it because for some reason, she likes the way the garden looks! I told her the weeds becoming that tall is a potential fire risk and, co-incidentally I also needed space for my shed! She thought about this for a bit and decided that I was right, and the kids can have more space to play outside. Good thing she doesn’t know how large I am intending to build the Shed!
So with the better half on-board we accepted the Gardener’s quote to get the weeds to get cut out. I had sought quotes from several other gardeners, but was a waste of time as the first quote was the cheapest. I knew I was on a good wicket with a great deal so I paid him before he could change his mind! We set a date for when he would come over to do it. I informed the missus, I won’t be able to help with the kids. I needed to focus on the gardener and provide him any help if he needs it, and maybe share a cold one after a hard days work!. Luckily she allowed this without too much resistance!
He rocked up a little late but I didn’t give him a hard time as he had to cart all his fancy tools. What would have taken me days can be done in hours with all his gear. I told him I plan on building a tool shed in the middle of the yard. He told me it was actually a great plan (hear that love!?) and that he wished he had the space for it.
When he finally finished, the weeds were finally short enough and we also built a path going to the Shed. Now, the next thing I needed to do was to build the tool shed so I asked the gardener if he had any mates who were up for the job. Cheapest way to build a shed was to pay him cash and keep it off the books! He gave me the business card of his friend the Chippy which was great because I did not have to look on the Internet again! Since the gardener was a good bloke, I assumed the person he recommended was also a top bloke. I gave the guy a call and we set another day for the time when he would build the Shed. He told me it would just take him a day to build the entire thing!
The carpenter already brought all the needed materials which was already included in the money I was going to pay him. He started right away, I just watched him because he told me he did not need my help. He told me to ask the neighbors if the construction was fine because he was going to be a bit noisy. Before I went to the neighbors, I decided to bring some snacks to them too. I got some water and chips and went to the neighbor while the carpenter was hard at work.
I prepared some drinks for the carpenter because I knew he would get tired after all that Hard Yakka. He has been working under the sun for a few hours now. I cooked him a huge t-bone steak because I saw his eyes light up when I pulled out the Barby. I even had some ice cold beer for him to drink. He finally got done with the shed and I was really happy with how it turned out. I hugged him because it was always I ever wanted even if he was a bit sweaty. I decided to bring two chairs inside the tool shed so the two of us can just sit there and laugh it up.
It has been a crazy day and it started to rain a bit too. I was lucky it did not rain while the shed was being made! I toasted him to a job well done and I told him that I would definitely be recommending him to all my mates who need a Chippy!
